The  Place de la Comedie, the focus of the city, is surrounded by lively cafes and fronted by an elegant opera house and the famous Fontaine des Trois Graces.

A broad esplanade of plane trees and ornamental fountains leads to the Corum conference centre, one of several brave new developments. The fortifications and mediaeval alleys of the historic centre are bordered by the Jardin du Peyrou with its splendid promenade, triumphal arch and Chateau d'Eau.
